“Catch” some Fabulous Food at a new Restaurant in Paso Robles

There’s a new restaurant in Paso serving a beautiful array of fish and seafood dishes as well as several grilled meat items. The chef, Chico Mora, isn’t new to Paso as he previously owned the space next door, named Chico’s Cafe. He created a wonderful space at his new restaurant, “The Catch“, by designing a large dining bar facing an open kitchen right in the middle of the restaurant. It has a fun vibe and the food they are putting out is awesome!

The open kitchen is well appointed with two main work stations. We were there on a busy evening and sat at the bar. Watching the three cooks in the kitchen was enthralling as they were perfectly on task creating a medley of delectable plates. Everything was organized and purposeful.  It was like poetry in motion!

The food is friendly and recognizable. You won’t see foams and drizzles here. What you will get is a hearty portion of good food done well. They are considerate in knowing that everything on the plate counts so they serve you perfectly prepared al dente vegetables and buttery crisp baby potatoes with your entree.

Our meal began with an order of Calamari and Green Lip Mussels. The calamari was a steak that was coated and pan fried and simply amazing! I could have made that my meal and been fully satisfied. And, this was the first time I had such meaty, large and delicious mussels since visiting New Zealand! The broth was good, but wasn’t enticing me to dip my bread in, so there’s some room for improvement there. I tried a taste of their clam chowder which leaned more on the fish stock base, than cream, but it was good. 

Their combination Shrimp and Scallop dish was a buttery and flavorful collection of seafood, mushrooms, capers and herbs nestled in an au gratin casserole dish. The shrimp and scallops were plump and juicy; so delicate and sweet. The sides were yummy and the potatoes worthy of a second mention. They were simply delicious!

The staff was friendly and conscientious. Yes, I’ll be back to “catch” more of what they have to offer!
